LAREDO, TX. - Friday is the last day to pay property taxes without penalty, as of Feb. 1, the owners will have to cover an extra 7 percent.
Approximately 70 percent of the 90,000 accounts that are handled by the tax office will avoid the surcharge due to timely payments or monthly payment agreements. However, there are still those who must pay the property taxes by Friday to avoid the surcharge that will increase per month if the owner delays making payments.
Adam Guajardo, coordinator of the Department of Revenue of the city, reported that during the 2012-13 fiscal year, 97.06 percent of total accounts were collected. This totaled to $65,881,649.15 and hope to exceede that total this year.
“This fiscal year began the first of October, but we have to wait for mail and card payments,” he said.
Guajardo explained that if someone sent payment by mail or electronically, charges usually do not come in until February. Officials take into account the date it was sent and not when it arrived.
Each month, a 2 percent charged up until July when a 15 percent will be given to a lawyer after the case is sent to the local government.
