LAREDO, Tx.- National Guard troops will head to the U.S.- Mexico border starting at the beginning of August for a year-long deployment.

Federal officials say troops will be assigned to keep a lookout for illegal immigrants that try to cross and for smugglers, and to aid in criminal investigations.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says the National Guard will deploy six intelligence analysis to Laredo to support federal, state and local law enforcement in our region.

The decision came after the sudden wake of violence in Nuevo Laredo that left at least 12 people dead and 21 injured.
