LAREDO, Tx.- During 16 months, Mike Cabello was out of his hometown traveling around Afghanistan for the reconstruction of that country, but was always surrounded by the danger of explosions and attacks.

The mechanical engineer by profession returned to Laredo and to his job as County Engineer, after fulfilling his mission of 420 days as part of the division of the Navy Seabees United States.

"The return seemed eternal, it was difficult staying in Afghanistan but at the same time I was an honor that I could serve my country in the role assigned to me," said Cabello.

The Navy veteran of 12 years was assigned to the battalion of construction and his job was to build camps where they trained in Afghan security forces to protect his country.

Although he did not experience moments of extreme danger, he was close to explosions and attacks on convoys of U.S. soldiers who are in that country.

“I am so happy to be back in my community, very thankful with the County authorities because I have my job back and ready to help in any way I can,” he assured.
