LAREDO, Tx.- With its international freight airport, its five international bridges, as well as its railway system, Laredo is aiming to become the leader in international trade and multiply the yearly 60 thousand million dollar business it already has thanks to the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

Yesterday during the First Business Round Table Laredo, Texas- Central America, at TAMIU premises, the Costa Rican Monica Araya, president of the Central American and Caribbean Federation of Chambers and Exporters' Associations , said that the region's countries want to seek a greater market niche in the United States, Canada, even Mexico and Europe, through Laredo, Texas.

In an exclusive interview with the Laredo Sun, Araya said that Laredo is in an excellent location to help businesses expand to the east and the west of the United States.

"Our exports and imports are approximately 80% with the United States, the rest of our commercial ties are with the same Central American countries, and with South America and a little bit less with Mexico and Europe, but we would like to expand our commercial ties," she mentioned.

She also added that Central America imports more (over 40 thousand million dollars), than what it exports (20 thousand million dollars) to the United States, but this difference does not represent a disadvantage, because they are raw products from the United States that are already transformed into finished products, like the case of Intell that makes computer processors, they send us the raw materials and we build them and send them back almost completely finished, to be shipped off to China.

"We are also the leading producers of pineapple and banana in the world, we export textiles, including steel and agro foods and we don't only want to reach the Hispanic market in the United States, like we did five years ago, when CAFTA began, but rather we want to be in all the corners of the country and from there jump to Europe, and also reach northern Mexico through Laredo," Monica Araya explained.

That is why we are here the Costa Rican said, ready to talk about business with people from different cities and different economic sectors, including logistics, transportation, potential customers, importers, exporters, especially those from the locality, who have a lot of experience in international trade.

The Central American and Caribbean Federation of Chambers and Exporters' Associations was established in 1985 as a regional entity that brings together private chambers that include the exporting sector of the region.

At the same time the Federation has the responsibility to execute important development programs for exporters and to promote the active participation of businesses in favor of the economic development of their countries.
